ABOUT THE SINGER

Deborah Stephens graduated from the University of Georgia in December 2019 with a Bachelors of Music in Voice Performance. She recently received her Masters in Sacred Music performance from Yale University in May 2023. She has been a featured soloist in UGA productions of Haydn’s Creation and Vivaldi’s Magnificat while also enjoying solo and choral engagements with churches across Georgia. While working at Athens First United Methodist Church, Deborah performed solos in Finzi’s In Terra Pax and Bach’s Magnificat. Deborah has sung in various UGA choirs including Hodgson Singers, the Choral Project, and the opera choruses in Cosi fan tutte and Don Giovanni. In September 2017, Deborah founded and began to direct VERITAS Vocal Ensemble, a small group of 10 UGA students passionate about choral singing. VERITAS has performed on the UGA Student Spotlight Concert, many faculty and student recitals, and hosted a joint-ensemble benefit concert to support music education.

Deborah's goals are to continue to sing in professional choirs, travel and sing all over the world, and eventually counsel young adults in professional skills and career readiness.

Deborah's passions include music, beauty/fashion, metaphysics, neuroscience, psychology, and supporting young adults. She has worked as a Cabin Counselor at numerous summer camps including the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp in Michigan and several UGA summer camps. It is important to her that young people have the opportunity to find community, purpose, love, and support through music without the hindrance of finances.

The aforementioned is a large part of the reason why she began Veritas Vocal Ensemble. Although Veritas is currently on hiatus, Deborah plans to continue directing them in the future and expand their performance to include music educational outreach and more frequent benefit recitals. In August 2019, Veritas had the honor of being invited to Distinguished Concerts in New York's 'The Music of Ola Gjeilo' performance at the Lincoln Center in the spring; unfortunately they will not be able to attend. Due to the ongoing pandemic Veritas will be on an indefinite hiatus beginning Spring 2020, but Deborah's goals include continued directorship and adding educational and mentorship outreaches.
